Mya was fanning the flames. She had collected wood and sticks and used Pop pops lighter to start a fire. She hoped it would keep away any more snakes and any other animals that might cause them harm. She piled leaves on the fire to help it burn but the leaves were damp and filled the air with smoke. She didn't realize it, but Mya made a rescue fire that could be seen from any of the fire towers in the entire state forest. Jordan sat on the only chair in the tower. He was too tired to climb down and he was running out of time. FIRE RESCUE ONE to FIRE RESCUE TWO. Jordan jumped into the air, who said that said Jordan looking all around. RESCUE TWO HERE, COME IN RESCUE ONE. Jordan saw the Ranger's two way radio on the counter by the big window. WE HAVE SMOKE IN QUADRANT THREE BUT NO ONE IS IN THAT TOWER TODAY. CAN YOU CHECK IT OUT? Jordan lifted the microphone from the radio. He squeezed the button and said hello. Hello? repeated Jordan. THIS IS RESCUE ONE WHO IS THIS? My name is Jordan and my Pop pop is hurt with my sister by where the smoke is coming from. OK JORDAN, This is officer Al, with the park ranger service. We have help on the way. You stay put in the tower and a ranger will be there shortly. I will, said Jordan. Rescue one, this is rescue two. We see the smoke. It is just north of the west tower. Ok rescue two. We have a young boy in the west tower looking for help. His Grandfather is hurt, and his sister is taking care of him. They are in the vicinity of the smoke. On our way Al said rescue two. Two rangers bounced into action. They jumped onto their four wheelers and started them up. One of them had a emergency stretcher trailer hooked on back. RRR ummm ERRRr ummmm off they went up the trail. Mya, said Pop pop in a low gruff voice. Pop pop, said Mya, are you alright? I think so said Pop pop, what happened? You got confused and then fell on the ground, Mya told Pop pop. Where is jordan he asked? Jordan went to the fire tower to find help. And who lit this fire asked Pop pop? I did, said Mya. I used your lighter. Very good Mya, said Pop pop. Pop pop tried to move but he couldn't. Gee Mya, I hope Jordan is ok and finds some help. Me too Pop pop, said Mya, me too. Jordan was sitting looking out the big window toward the smoke. I hope Pop pop and Mya are ok he thought. I've been gone a long time. RRRR UMMMM RRRUUUMMMMM Jordan heard the four wheelers coming up the trail. He knew that sound. Uncle Zack has two of them at home. Jordan looked down to the ground. He had to climb back down but his legs were to weak. Stay there young man yelled the Ranger up to Jordan. I am coming up. The Ranger was to the top of the tower in about three minutes. He stepped onto the deck next to Jordan. One call and we will go get your sister and Pop pop said the Ranger. The Ranger grabbed the microphone. RESCUE TWO TO RESCUE ONE, WE HAVE THE BOY. ON OUR WAY TO HELP THE OTHERS. TEN FOUR, SAID RESCUE ONE, WE COPY. That is police talk for ok we understand. The ranger put on a small harness and strapped Jordan to his back. Ok said the Ranger are you ready for the climb down. Yes said Jordan. Jordan was happy the Ranger was carrying him down. His arms and legs were so tired he would have never made it. Over the tower deck they went. Foot after foot and hand after hand, the ranger climbed down to the ground with Jordan safely strapped to his back. As the Rangers foot hit the ground, he pulled a strap and Jordan slid off and onto the ground. The Ranger jumped onto his four wheeler and told Jordan to get on. Jordan jumped on and put his arms around the Rangers waist and held on tight. Just like riding with uncle Zack or Uncle Ben. RRRRRUUUUUMMM RRRUUUMMMMMM The two rangers and jordan zoomed up the trail towards the smoke, and hopefully in time to save Pop pop and Mya. When they crossed the little bridge over the stream, Jordan knew they were almost there. He stopped at that stream to rest on his way to the fire tower. Listen Pop pop, Listen I hear someone coming said Mya. Pop pop was too weak to look up. He smiled as best he could at Mya. Mya rubbed his head and said, it's gonna be ok Poppop. Help is almost here. RRRRUUUMMMM RRRRUUMMMM The rangers pulled into the small clearing where Pop pop was laying. Jordan hopped off and went to Pop pop and Mya. Mya hugged Jordan. How is he Jordan asked? He woke up said Mya. He knew who I was, and he asked about you. He is very weak though. Jordan and Mya watched as the Rangers tied Pop pop to the stretcher, then the stretcher back in the trailer. Ok kids, said the Ranger, hop on and hold tight. With Pop pop in the trailer, Mya and Jordan each jumped on the back of the two four wheelers and held on tight. RRRRuuumm Ruuummm. The Rangers drove up the trail. Up and down the hills through the forest they traveled. Some of the trail was very rocky and bumpy and they had to go slow. Pop pop was laying in the trailer, bouncing all around. It could not be comfortable thought Jordan. But at least Pop pop was alive, and him and Mya were now safe. The Rangers drove off the trail and into a small paved parking area. The sign said, Welcome to Sunrise Mountain. Jordan smiled. He knew if Pop pop could talk he would say look we made it and would laugh. Pop pop was funny like that. All of a sudden they heard a thundering, WOP WOP WOP WOPPing sound. Mya looked up and said look Jordan. Jordan and Mya watched as a big helicopter landed in the parking lot. The ranger with Pop pop pulled the trailer next to the helicopter. Then, two men lifted the stretcher with Pop pop into the helicopter. When they had him all strapped and buckled in Mya began to cry. Jordan had tears in his eyes too. Bye Pop pop, Bye, they both said sadly. We love you. No goodbyes here said the Ranger, but said Jordan, You are going with Pop pop. Mya and Jordan smiled. Get on board kids we have to get your Pop pop to the hospital. Jordan and Mya buckled their seatbelts. Then the whooping sound began again. WOP WOP WOP WOP PPPPPPPPPPPPPPP And up into the sky they went. end part three.
