The boy looked into Mya and Jordan's eyes. Mya and Jordan were looking directly back at him. We saw you by the river bank, said Mya. We wanted to find you and be friends. Yes said Jordan, we want to be friends. I wish the same, said Running Rabbit. Running Rabbit got his name from his father, Chief Wasincharge. When Running Rabbit was born his father left the tee pee and saw a running rabbit, and bam,,,, that was it. Running Rabbit became the little Indian boys name. I am Jordan, and this is my sister Mya, said Jordan. I know said Running Rabbit. I have been sent to you, by the Great Spirit in the sky. Mya looked at Jordan, I don't understand she said. I think he means God, said Jordan. I, said running rabbit, was chosen to watch over you and your families. Like a guardian angel , asked Jordan, now all excited . You look kind of familiar said Mya, but we have never met before. But still I feel like I know you she said. Perhaps said running rabbit , you remember me from your pop pop's chicken coop when you fed me. Running Rabbit smiled. Or maybe when I was eating berries near you and scared you both by mistake. Sorry for that by the way. Then I had to lead you back home to safety. You, said Mya, you are the fox and the bear? Yes said Running Rabbit, I was supposed to protect and help you, without revealing my true self. Running Rabbit turned to Jordan and said yes, I am your guardian angel.
We need to hurry, said Running Rabbit, turning his attention in the direction of the river. Your grandma is in danger. The children followed Running Rabbit back toward the river. They talked on the way. Do you remember, said Running Rabbit , that when you got to the rock beach, that there was no one else there? Yes, said Jordan. There are usually many people swimming there on hot days like today. Well said Running Rabbit, the river was closed by the State Forest Rangers for today. There is a big damn up river on the Mongap Reservoir. They are releasing all the water to repair damage on the damn, from the heavy rains last night. They must have forgotten to close the cornfield road.
The children were moving as fast as they could through the tall green cornstalks. Are you sure we are going the right way, Mya asked? Yes Mya, said Running Rabbit. I grew up right here with my entire tribe long ago. I know this land very very well. What will happen when the damn is opened and the water is released, asked Jordan? A big wall of churning, crushing, water will rush down the river ten feet high, washing away everything near the water and riverbank.**GRANDMA**! screamed Mya and Jordan at the same time. They ran faster then ever before. Hurry Running Rabbit said Jordan. Yes, hurry faster said Mya.
The children came to the small clearing where the car was parked. Jordan jumped down the river bank path and saw Grandma. Mya was right behind him. Grandma! Grandma! Cried the kids. Wake up, wake up. Just then a car was speeding down the dirt road. Amanda heard about the dam release inside the general store on her very last errand. The car came to a skid in the dirt clearing and she hopped out. By then, Mya and Jordan had grandma's hands, and were pulling her up the path. Into the car said Amanda hurriedly, we don't have much time.
Just then, they all heard a thundering wave, crashing and swooshing coming down the river. Jordan and Mya wanted to look but there was no time. Amanda put the car into drive and up the hill they went. At the top they stopped and watched the wall of water flood the river. Like a big wave in the ocean it crashed right on the rock beach where they were swimming. Holy molly said Jordan, we got out just in time. Where is Running Rabbit asked Mya. She was worried about her new friend. Who is Running Rabbit, asked Amanda looking at grandma. Jordan immediately spoke up. Oh Running Rabbit is our make believe friend. Jordan remembered that Running Rabbit was not supposed to reveal his true angel self. As the water began to settle, and the flood was going back down, Amanda backed the car down into the clearing. They all got out and hugged each other so hard. How did you know there was danger, asked Amanda? The children, said grandma, they started screaming grandma, grandma, and then pulled me up the hill to safety. How did you know repeated their mom. Jordan looked at Mya and Mya winked at him. A little bird told us mommy, said Mya. Yes said Jordan a little bird.
We'd better be going said grandma. I'm glad the water didn't reach my car. Jordan and Mya got into grandma's car, she had the car seats. Amanda put her car into drive, and grandma followed her back up the dirt road, through the woods, and past the cornfield. Mya and Jordan looked intently at the cornfield but did not see Running Rabbit. As the cars pulled onto the main road, something in the sky caught Jordan's eye. He looked at Mya and pointed up. Mya stretched her head close to the window and looked up. There flying high in the sky, right over the cars, was a bald eagle. Mya smile at Jordan and said, do ya think? I don't think said Jordan I know. Both children let out a sigh of relief and relaxed. Tired from the excitement and wonderful day, they fell fast asleep right there in the car. When they got to grandma and pop pop's, Amanda lifted them up and put them in their car, where they slept the entire ride home. The End.
