The Adventures of Mya and Jordan 1/15/17 A day with Grandma
It was a warm summers day and the sky was blue, and the grass was greener then I've ever seen before. Birds were playing in the puddles from last night's rain, and the sun's rays were feeding warmth and energy to all gods creatures. The rabbits, chickens, deer, the fish. Cat's and dogs everywhere were enjoying the sunny summer day. . I'm hot, moaned Jordan! I am too, said Mya. Maybe mommy will bring us to grandma and pop pops house, and we can go swimming in the river. That 's a great idea Jordan said with a big smile. He liked going to grandma and pop pops house. It was fun there. Mom, said Mya, can we go to pop pops and go swimming in the river? Hmmm, said her mom Amanda, that sounds so good on a day like this. So they loaded up the car, and off they went.
As they pulled into the driveway, Mya and Jordan were looking at all the pretty flowers growing all over. Strawberries, shouted Mya as she looked at the side garden by the driveway. Oh man, exclaimed Jordan, they are huge. Their seat belts flew open as soon as Amanda put the car into park, and out jumped Mya and Jordan. Right into the strawberry patch. lol. The peaches were growing, apples the size of quarters, black berries and raspberries and blueberries were growing all over. Grams came outside so surprised to see them. Oh wow, how great she said, you guys all came to see me. Yes said Amanda, and we came to go swimming too, said Mya, it's really hot out today. Where is pop pop ? Oh goodness said grandma, pop pop had to go to work. They needed a couple of extra men at the shop, and he went in to help out for the day. Come give grandma a big hug. Both Mya and Jordan looked up at grandma. Their faces and hands already stained red from the big fat juicy strawberries. Mya jumped up and squeezed grandma real hard, leaving two little red hand prints on grandma's butt. Jordan just kept picking and eating. Well said grandma, let me get some towels and floaty toys and we can go. I have to run a few errands mom, said Amanda. That's fine said grandma, the kids and I will be fine. Okay then said Amanda, I'll meet up with you at the river a little later on. Bye mommy said Mya and Jordan. Amanda hugged and squeezed they both . I'll see you soon.Take good care of grandma you two. We will, as always said Jordan.
The river was very close to grandma and pop pops house, but the long bumpy dirt road through the woods and cornfields made it seem far. As they drove through the fields, they saw all kinds of little critters. Squirrels, geese, tons of chipmunks, and even a few deer crossing back and forth from field to woods and back again, eating the corn and carrying it back to their nests to store for the winter.
Finally they reached the clearing near the water. They were the only ones there. That was surprising, as it was really hot out, and this was the favorite swimming hole, of all the local folks. Jordan, as always, was leading the way down the short path to the river edge. There was no sand. Only millions of soft rounded rocks. I remember pop pop said once, that the water when it was high, would cause the rocks to tumble down the stream making them oval and round by bouncing off each other and chipping off tiny pieces.
Grandma carried the kids towels, and a folding chair for her. Mya and Jordan were playing in the water. Not too far out, said grandma, I know, said Jordan. Mya, said Jordan, we need to stay close to shore so we don't get pulled in too deep by the current. Okay said Mya,. not really listening to him. She was already lost day dreaming in the cool water. The water was the perfect temperature. It was a little cooler than the air outside, and it felt great. Jordan and Mya were picking small rocks off the bottom and trying to throw them across the river. Then all of a sudden Jordan skipped a rock off the top of the water. Hey Mya said Jordan, did you see that? The rock bounced off the water. They both tried hard to make it happen again, but it wouldn't work. After a short time in the water, Mya and Jordan joined grandma on the rock beach. Grams was relaxing in her chair in the warm sun, and they both laid near her on their towels. The sun feels really good doesn't it Jordan? Mya asked. It sure does said Jordan. All of a sudden grandma started to snore. Just like old pop pop, grandma fell asleep.
Jordan heard a noise up on the riverbank, right at the edge of the woods, nearest the cornfield. Did you hear that Mya, Jordan asked? No said Mya, all I hear is grandma snoring, she laughed. Both of them began to scan the bank with their sharp little eyes. Suddenly, Jordan saw something move around a big oak tree. Right there Mya, said Jordan. Mya looked toward the tree and jumped up to her feet. It is a little Indian boy said Mya. Pop pop told me once, that long ago, the Minisink Indians used to live here along the river. Maybe they still do said Jordan. Just then the boy disappeared. Grandma is sleeping said Mya, she will be okay here. Let's go find him Jordan. Jordan led the way up the bank and into the cornfield. The corn stalks were taller then them, and they could not see anything. Jordan said follow me Mya, I have an idea. He headed back to the edge of the cornfield to the wood line. Give me a boost Mya, said Jordan. Mya put her hands together and boosted Jordan up to a low branch in the tree. Then he stretched his arm and grabbed the next branch with his hand. Then his foot, then his hand, and another branch. Jordan was climbing his first tree.
When Jordan stopped climbing he was so high he could see the whole cornfield. What do you see, asked Mya? Jordan looked hard across all the tops of the green cornstalks. When his eyes reached the middle of the cornfield he was stunned at what he saw. It's a tee pee Mya, said Jordan. A tee pee is the Indian name for tent. Oh wow said Mya, I knew he was a real Indian boy.
Jordan used the biggest, highest trees to mark the direction they should walk through the cornfield to find the tee pee. As long as he could see the trees from the ground he knew he could get very close to it. He climbed back down to Mya and then began walking toward the spot he had marked. After about ten minutes, they came to a small cleared circle in the corn, and sure enough, there was the tee pee. Hello, said Mya, Hello said Jordan, is anyone here? No one answered. We should look inside said Jordan. No, demanded Mya, It does not belong to us. Mya was always the voice of reason. Yea, I guess you are right Mya said Jordan. Maybe we should go and get grandma, he said. The children turned to go back the way they came, and right there in front of them was the little Indian boy. End part one. :)
